CAN bus requires 120 Ohm resistance across the CAN+ and CAN- wires. Most Engine Control Modules (ECMs) internally contain the 120 Ohm resistance necessary for communication on the bus. Most other Electronic Control Units (ECUs) within an automobile do not internally contain 120 Ohm resistance - they rely on the ECM's CAN termination for communication on the bus.
When programming an ECU on the benchtop, 120 Ohm CAN termination is required. If the ECU you are programming does not contain 120 Ohm termination, and there are no other ECUs on the communication bus that do contain 120 Ohm termination, then this CAN termination harness will be required for benchtop programming. Y-Splitter harness EFI# 100-01041 is required to connect this CAN termination harness on the benchtop. Y-Splitter harness is sold separately.
